Tijdens Pride Amsterdam 2019 zal theaterlegende Jimmy Hutchinson in ’t Zonnehuis een hommage brengen aan Gay Broadway. De vijfenzeventigjarige zanger/docent Jimmy Hutchinson viert met zijn one-man show ‘Hats off to Broadgay’ dat hij vijftig jaar in het vak zit. Voor deze ‘homoge’ selecteerde hij een lijst van songs die allemaal hun eigen link hebben met gay Broadway. “This show has something for everybody; lesbian, homo, bi, trans and also hetero” aldus Hutchinson.
Deze unieke one-man-show bevat een mix van liedjes en verhalen over gay-componisten en tekstschrijvers, musicals met gay thema’s en songs gecomponeerd voor vrouwen. Met muziek uit o.a. Cabaret, The Sound of Music, West Side Story en van componisten als Stephen Sondheim en Cole Porter stelde Hutchinson een gevarieerd, Engelstalig programma samen van ongeveer 75 minuten. Hij begeleidt zichzelf op piano.
Naast prachtige muziek, deelt Hutchinson in Hats off to Broadgay leuke anekdotes met het publiek. Zo verwerkte componist Cole Porter bijvoorbeeld geheime teksten in zijn shows. Porter zorgde er voor met nummers zoals ‘You’re the top’ dat zijn vrienden verhalen in zijn voorstellingen zouden herkennen over homoseksualiteit.
Hutchinson speelde als uitvoerend artiest in verschillende musicals in binnen en buitenland waaronder Sweeney Todd (1993), My Fair Lady (1995), Jungle Book, Alladin – de Musical, 42nd Street en Rembrandt- de Musical. Voor zijn rollen in Jungle Book en Alladin werd hij genomineerd voor een John Kraaijkamp Musical Award. Hij is tevens een welbekende zangdocent; op dit moment is er geen musical in Nederland zonder leerlingen van hem. Hij was ook officieel vocal coach voor o.a. Miss Saigon, Elizabeth, Mamma Mia en veel producties van OpusOne. Voor televisie was hij betrokken bij o.a. Sterrenjacht en So You Wanna Be A Popstar.
